How to Brew: Moka Pot | Stove Top
The Moka Pot is a classic Italian stovetop coffee maker, perfect for making rich, espresso-like coffee at home. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to brewing with a Moka Pot.
What You’ll Need:
- Moka Pot (6-cup or any size you have)
- Noni’s Coffee Beans (medium-fine grind, similar to table salt)
- Water (filtered for best results)
- Hob / Stove Top / Camping Stove
- Spoon
1. Boil the Water First: Start by boiling water in a separate kettle. Preheating water helps reduce the chance of burning the coffee grounds and improves the flavour. |
2. Fill the Water Chamber: Unscrew the bottom chamber of the Moka Pot. Pour the preheated water into the chamber until it reaches just below the safety valve. Do not overfill. |
3. Add Coffee Grounds: Fill the filter basket with your medium-fine coffee grounds. Use enough to fill it to the top but don't tamp (press) it down. Level it off with a spoon. |
4. Assemble the Moka Pot: Insert the filter basket into the water chamber and screw the top chamber onto the base tightly, but not overly tight. |
5. Heat on the Stove: Place the Moka Pot on the stove over medium heat. Leave the lid open so you can see the coffee brewing. As the water heats, pressure pushes the water through the coffee grounds and up into the top chamber. |
6. Watch for the Gurgling Sound: After a few minutes, you’ll hear a gurgling sound, which means the coffee is brewing and nearing completion. Once the top chamber is filled with coffee, remove the Moka Pot from the heat. |
7. Cool the Base: Run the base under cold water to stop the brewing process and prevent over-extraction, which can make the coffee bitter. |
8. Pour and Enjoy: Give the coffee a stir before pouring to mix the layers of coffee. Serve immediately and enjoy! |
